Your doctor has given you the lowdown on how to protect yourself against breast, colon, and lung cancer: Get yearly mammograms (check) and regular colonoscopies (check), and don't smoke (double check). But when was the last time she asked if you had any persistent mouth sores, unexplained fevers or joint pain, or discomfort during sex?

These can be symptoms of three cancers - oral, leukemia, and endometrial - that don't get the attention they deserve. Even though they are among the most common cancers affecting women over age 55, these diseases can fall through the cracks as doctors focus on the biggest killers hogging the health headlines, says Elmer Huerta, MD, MPH, president of the American Cancer Society.

Oral cancer
Your risk: 1 in 98, with diagnoses peaking between the ages of 55 and 65. Oral cancer is lethal more often than it needs to be because people tend to ignore symptoms (it's typically caught in late stages).

Stay healthy: Watch your mouth: See a dentist or doctor about any sore in your mouth or on your lips that doesn't clear up in 2 weeks. A change in color or persistent pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in your mouth or on your lips should also prompt a fast visit.

Curb your vices: About 75 percent of oral cancers are caused by smoking and drinking alcohol. When such habits were considered unladylike, men with oral cancer outnumbered women 6 to 1, says Sol Silverman Jr., DDS, a professor of oral medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry. "But in the last 50 years, the incidence in women has soared - now the ratio is two men to every woman." Limit your intake to one drink per day.

The waters in the Caribbean and around Latin America for a long time have provided a path for illicit drugs to flow into the United States, but the U.S. Navy has increased its patrols in the region now looking for something else – Hezbollah terrorists, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

The Navy, in trolling for mini-submarines sometimes used to transport drugs, has discovered that some of them apparently are being operated by Hezbollah.

The mini-subs are small semi-submersibles, made of fiberglass and capable of carrying up to four people plus a payload. They are popular with drug smugglers, and now the U.S. is concerned elements of Hezbollah have begun using them for drug-running or smuggling weapons.

"In 2006, we were tracking around three of these," said Navy Admiral James Stavridis, commander of U.S. Southern Command. "In the year 2007, (the number) jumped to about 30. This year so far, in three months, we've seen about 30."

In drawing the connection to Hezbollah, Stravridis said there is concern about the "tri-border area (of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay). It is, in my view, principally Hezbollah activity.

"There is clearly fund-raising, money laundering, drug trafficking," Stravridis added. "And, certainly a portion of the funds that are raised in that are making their way back to the Middle East."

"The item in today's Drudge Report is categorically untrue. There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."

And along with Oprah's statement, Drudge includes this photo of Obama being interviewed on Oprah's show.

I don't know when he was on the show, but if it was after he declared his candidacy for president, then she's made herself out to be a liar.

Oprah is an Obama girl, but you'd think as a brilliant business woman she'd take advantage of hosting Sarah Palin for the ratings bonanza, but she decided to walk away. Her staff, according to Drudge, is divided on the issue.

The federal government has prepared a plan to take control of troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, several newspapers reported Friday night.

The Washington Post reported on its Web site that government officials had told the two companies that their top executives would be dismissed and government funds used to prop them up. The New York Times said the company boards also would be replaced.

The Times described the plan as effectively a government bailout that could cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars and would be among the largest rescues in U.S. history.

The newspapers said an announcement of a takeover could come this weekend.

Overdraft outrage: You weigh in

Infuriated readers had a lot to say about overdraft fees -especially the way they're calculated.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Danial Roy had about $30 left in his checking account when he made two small charges of less than $5 each. But when he then wrote a check for $435, he was hit with not one, but three overdraft fees of $35 each.

The bank refused to waive any of the fees, despite his requests, he said. "I have given up trying to fight them on this." Commerce Bank of Kansas City, where Roy holds his account, declined to comment.

You incur overdraft fees when a bank approves a transaction even though you don't have enough money in your account to cover it. The bank is basically charging you a flat fee for a temporary loan - usually between $25 and $35 - regardless of how much the overdraft was. Even a few pennies over your balance are enough to trigger the fees.

That's the topic I addressed in a recent Raw Deal column. And, a lot of you, like Roy, responded with your own painful experiences, particularly about a specific bank practice that increases the likelihood of multiple overdraft fees.

Raw Deal: Overdraft protection
Many readers learned the hard way that, according to bank policy, checks or charges are debited in an order determined by the bank rather than the order in which you made them - so banks generally debit the largest pending transaction first. If that transaction overdraws the account, any other smaller transactions you made will result in overdrafts as well, even if they predated the larger one.

And while the banks say they are providing a service to consumers, some consumer advocacy groups say they're hitting the very people that can least afford it.

"The large majority of overdraft fees are paid by a core group of consumers," said Rebecca Borné, policy counsel with the Center for Responsible Lending, "members of the population that are more vulnerable and less able to bounce back."

College student Miguel Carreon, for example, wrote in to tell us how he recently made eight payments (including charges as small as 99 cents) over the course of one weekend, which left him with overdraft charges totaling $264.

Palin's conservative Christian views have energized that part of the GOP electorate, which was lukewarm to John McCain's candidacy before he named her as his vice presidential choice. She is staunchly anti-abortion, opposing exceptions for rape and incest, and opposes gay marriage and spousal rights for gay couples.

Muslims condemn censorship of hadiths seeking dead Jews

Muslim students on the campus of the University of Southern California have condemned a school decision to take down certain hadiths – or sayings of Muhammad – that called for dead Jews and had been posted on a student group's website.

"We are outraged at the censorship of a complete religious and classic text without consulting us or any religious authority first," the Muslim Student Union said in a prepared statement. "The 'compendium' is now incomplete. There are verses in many religious texts (be it the Torah or the New Testament) that when taken out of context can be taken as offensive."

The decision to order the hadiths taken down from a site run by the Muslim Student Association, a separate organization, was made by Provost C.L. Max Nikias, according to a report today in the student newspaper, the Daily Trojan.

He approved the deletion of the statements because they urged Muslims to kill Jews. The statements were in a collection of hadiths, or historical sayings attributed to Muhammad although not included in the Quran.

The call for the deaths of unbelievers has become an issue even for some Muslims. In the new book, "Why We Left Islam," authors Susan Crimp and Joel Richardson profiled those who now would be under their old religion's sentence of death for abandoning Muhammad's teachings.

One of those whose testimony is included in the book, Ali, wrote, "The Quran is full of verses that teach killing of unbelievers and how Allah would torture them after they die."

Mortgage giants face US takeover

WASHINGTON - Senior officials from the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve yesterday informed top executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage finance giants, that the government was preparing to seize the two companies and place them in a conservatorship, officials and company executives briefed on the discussions said.

The plan, effectively a government bailout, was outlined in separate meetings that the chief executives were summoned to attend yesterday at the office of the companies' new regulator. The executives were told that, under the plan, they and their boards would be replaced and shareholders would be virtually wiped out but that the companies would be able to continue functioning with the government generally standing behind their debt, people briefed on the discussions said.

It is not possible to calculate the cost of any government bailout, but the huge potential liabilities of the companies could cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars and make any rescue among the largest in the nation's history.

The drastic effort follows the bailout this year of Bear Stearns, the investment bank, as government officials continue to grapple with how to stem the credit crisis and housing crisis that have hobbled the economy. With Bear Stearns, the government provided guarantees and the bulk of its assets were transferred to JPMorgan Chase, leaving shareholders with a nominal amount.

Under a conservatorship, the remaining common and preferred shares of Fannie and Freddie would be worth little, and any losses on mortgages they own or guarantee could be paid by taxpayers. A conservatorship would operate much like a prepackaged bankruptcy, similar to what smaller companies use to clean up their books and then emerge with stronger balance sheets.

Democrat Barack Obama's much-vaunted political star power took a drubbing this week as the woman in the GOP's No. 2 spot bypassed him in favorability polls, according to Rasmussen Reports.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, virtually unknown in the lower 48 states a week ago, is now viewed favorably by 58 percent of American voters, despite days of relentless negative news reports and political attacks preceding her acceptance speech Wednesday, Rasmussen reported. Its national telephone survey found that 37 percent of voters hold an unfavorable view of the self-described hockey mom.

Before her acceptance speech, Palin was viewed favorably by 52 percent. A week ago, 67 percent had never heard of her, Rasmussen reported.

They resold this data, knowing it would directly result in less business for appraisers - as lenders used this data over and over in the desktop appraisals - without paying the original appraiser for it. I think that for the Appraisal Institute to be part of this reselling of appraiser data is disgusting treatment of all residential real estate appraisers - by an organization who says they are "our friend". This data directly led to an awful lot of less work for appraisers nationwide. And, it continues today.

Plaintiffs Harold H. Huggins Realty, Inc. ("Huggins Realty"), P.E. Turner & Company, Ltd. ("P.E. Turner"), Residential Appraisal and Consulting, Inc. ("Residential"), and Alfonso V. Torres d/b/a Front Door Appraisals ("Torres"), provide residential real estate appraisal services. They have brought a class action complaint against FNC, Inc. ("FNC"), on behalf of all real estate appraisers who have used FNC's "AppraisalPort" internet-based service. Following their national convention in Denver last week, Democratic organizers heaped up thousands of unused U.S. flags and threw them away, but the McCain campaign has since salvaged the Star-Spangled Banners and intends to use them at a rally in Colorado Springs.

A Denver Post blog reports that a worker at Denver's Invesco Field discovered the discarded flags following Barack Obama's nomination speech at the mile-high stadium last week.

Now, according to Fox News, a group of Boy Scouts have brought 84 garbage bags full of the trashed flags to the site of a McCain rally in Colorado Springs, where the flags will be used as part of a warm-up ceremony before the Republican nominee takes the stage.

(Fortune Magazine) -- "I understand why lizards live in sunny Arizona," sings Robert Earl Keen. "Why people do and call it home I'll never understand." Neither will I, but obviously we're in the minority. "People come out here - they like it," insists Tanya Wheeless, CEO of the Arizona Bankers Association.

Especially in winter, but even in high summer, when it's nearly triple digits all through the night, and the rain, when it comes, feels like a hot shower in a steamy bathroom. "Nothing looks rundown," says Wheeless, who's taking me on a driving tour this afternoon (nobody walks here) of Maricopa, 37 miles south of Phoenix. "Streets are wide. Everything is new. You expect everything to be new, you know?"

Just a few years ago Maricopa was a desert crossroads surrounded by cotton fields. Remnants of old Maricopa still exist: a check-cashing business, a rough-looking bar called the Headquarters Lounge, a rustic strip-mall precursor called the Maricopa Business Barn - none of those places look new.

But north and south of the old town center along Route 347 you'll find nothing but clean new subdivisions filled with row after row of identical homes. Mainly stucco with a little bit of rock. No yards to speak of, but playgrounds, swimming pools, walking trails, and a few perfect patches of what could be real grass, I suppose, but looks way too green. "From the $130s," says the sign facing the road.

The pattern repeats all over the valley, evidence at every turn of Phoenix's phenomenal growth in jobs, in housing, and in wealth.

In 2000, Arizona banks held $43 billion in deposits. In 2007 the total was $80 billion, the lion's share controlled by three large national banks. Arizona is third behind Alaska and California in terms of the fewest bank branches per capita. Plenty of room for newcomers, even if all they ever grab is a sliver of market share. Making Phoenix an obvious place to open a bank.

Towne Bank, which sprouted in suburban Mesa just four years ago and still has only one retail location, was one of those opportunistic upstarts, a bank built on a bubble.

WASHINGTON - Mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - despite their robust cadre of economists and mortgage experts - failed to heed warnings that the most dramatic housing bubble in U.S. history would burst.

The companies - particularly Freddie Mac - didn't raise enough cash to reassure Wall Street that they would be able to withstand a severe downturn in U.S. home prices.

As their losses started rising at alarming rates, investors simply lost confidence, forcing the government's historic takeover of the two companies, which could be announced as soon as Sunday.

Democratic Rep. Barney Frank, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said in an interview Saturday that the companies' financial picture was better than investors assumed, but "it just plainly became clear that elements of the market wouldn't accept that."

Investors have reason to be jittery.

On Friday, the Mortgage Bankers Association said that more than 4 million American homeowners with a mortgage, a record 9 percent, were either behind on their payments or in foreclosure at the end of June.

Also on Friday, Nevada regulators shut down Silver State Bank, the 11th failure this year of a federally insured bank. In July, regulators seized IndyMac, which had $19 billion in deposits. And earlier this year, the government orchestrated the takeover of investment bank Bear Stearns Cos. by JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has been in contact in recent weeks with foreign governments that hold billions of dollars of Fannie and Freddie debt to reassure them that the United States recognizes the importance of the two companies.

Nevertheless, the Bank of China said in late August that it cut back its portfolio of the Fannie and Freddie's debt by about one quarter since the end of June.

Washington-based Fannie and McLean, Virginia-based Freddie are the engines behind a complex process of buying, bundling and selling mortgages that remains a mystery to millions of Americans whose home loans pass through this system. Together Fannie and Freddie hold or guarantee about $5 trillion in mortgage debt - about half of the U.S. total.

They traditionally backed the safest loans, 30-year fixed rate mortgages that required a down payment of at least 20 percent. But in recent years, they lowered their standards dramatically, matching a decline fueled by Wall Street banks that backed the now-defunct subprime lending industry.

The tax-funded Chicago organization cited as a probable model for programs to integrate youth into the social and political world under an Obama tenure in the White House is the epitome of "Big Brother" that shovels impressionable youth through a course of brainwashing, according to critics.

The organization is called Public Allies and Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama was a founding member of the board of directors in 1992. He later resigned and his wife became executive director of the group.

According to an editorial in Investor's Business Daily, Obama plans to use the non-profit, which is funded partly by the federal government and is featured on Obama's campaign website, as the model for a national service corps, called the "Universal Voluntary Public Service."

WND reported earlier when Obama asserted in a Colorado Springs speech that the U.S. needs a "civilian national security force" that would be as powerful, strong and well-funded as the half-trillion dollar Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force.

In the July 2 speech in Colorado Springs, Obama insisted the U.S. "cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set."

He continued, "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

"Big Brother had nothing on the Obamas," said IBD. "They plan to herd American youth into government-funded re-education camps where they'll be brainwashed into thinking America is a racist, oppressive place in need of 'social change.'"

The organization itself doesn't seem that alarming. It describes itself as serving communities "while developing better leaders for tomorrow." Young adults are placed in "community leadership" posts with various agencies and given weekly "training." They get $1,800 plus health and child care.

But IBD warns the real mission is something else.

That, the editorial said, "is to radicalize American youth and use them to bring about 'social change' through threats, pressure, tensions and confrontation – the tactics used by the father of community organizing, Saul 'The Red' Alinsky."

Some teens so heavy they face liver damage, transplants

TRENTON, N.J. - In a new and disturbing twist on the obesity epidemic, some overweight teenagers have severe liver damage caused by too much body fat, and a handful have needed liver transplants.

Many more may need a new liver by their 30s or 40s, say experts warning that pediatricians need to be more vigilant. The condition, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure or liver cancer, is being seen in kids in the United States, Europe, Australia and even some developing countries, according to a surge of recent medical studies and doctors interviewed by The Associated Press.

The American Liver Foundation and other experts estimate 2% to 5% of American children over age 5, nearly all of them obese or overweight, have the condition, called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

"It's clearly the most common cause of liver disease," said Dr. Ronald Sokol, head of public policy at the liver foundation and a liver specialist at Children's Hospital and University of Colorado Denver.

Some experts think as many as 10% of all children and half of those who are obese may suffer from it, but note that few are given the simple blood test that can signal its presence. A biopsy is the only sure way to diagnose this disease.

As fat builds up, the liver can become inflamed and then scarred over time, leading to cirrhosis, a serious condition, which in years past was mostly caused by hepatitis or drinking too much alcohol. Liver failure or liver cancer can follow, but if cirrhosis has not yet developed, fatty liver disease can be reversed through weight loss.

The disease is most common in overweight children with belly fat and certain warning signs, such as diabetes or cholesterol or heart problems. However, it's been seen in a few children of normal weight.

Slip of the tongue or momentary confusion? In a television interview today discussing his religion, Sen. Barack Obama stated, "My Muslim faith."

Obama, speaking to ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week," was talking about what he described as "smears" that were claiming he was a Muslim when he maintains he is a practicing Christian.

"Let's not play games," Obama stated. "What I was suggesting – you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you're absolutely right that that has not come."

Stephanopoulos immediately interrupted Obama, stating, "Christian faith."

"My Christian faith," Obama quickly said. "Well, what I'm saying is that he (McCain) hasn't suggested that I'm a Muslim. And I think that his campaign's upper echelons have not, either. What I think is fair to say is that, coming out of the Republican camp, there have been efforts to suggest that perhaps I'm not who I say I am when it comes to my faith – something which I find deeply offensive, and that has been going on for a pretty long time."

The statements came amid an exchange in which Obama accused Republicans of spreading "lies" that he is a Muslim. McCain, though, has strongly condemned such accusations.

France refuses to recognise Scientology as a religion, categorising it as a purely commercial operation and keeping it under surveillance.

This case stems from claims by a woman who said she was approached by Scientologists in a Paris street in 1998 and offered a free personality test.

She says she ended up handing over more than 20,000 euros (£16,000) for courses, books, illegally prescribed drugs and an "electrometer" supposed to measure fluctuations in her mental state.

Scientology 'faces French trial'

The Church of Scientology in France will be tried in court for "organised fraud", according to legal sources.

The lawyer for one of the plaintiffs behind the case told the BBC that if convicted the controversial Church could be banned.

The Church has faced stiff opposition in France as well as Germany, where it has been declared unconstitutional.

The French branch of the Church of Scientology said it had been cleared of "numerous" similar charges.

It said such charges should not be brought to court again.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – "Brides" and "grooms" are no longer allowed to marry in the State of California.

That privilege is only extended to individuals who allow themselves to be called "Party A" and "Party B" on marriage licenses.

Pastor Doug Bird of Abundant Life Fellowship in Roseville, Calif., was alarmed to find the state now rejects the traditional terms after he officiated his first marriage ceremony last week following the California Supreme Court decision to overturn Proposition 22.

The couple had written the words "bride" and "groom" next to "Party A" and "Party B" because they wanted to be legally recognized as husband and wife.

However, the Placer County marriage license was denied.
